Celebrating the Itsekiri Language: A Living Heritage for Future Generations

Itsekiri Children’s Language Competition

The Itsekiri Children’s Language Competition filled the air with poetry, history, and song as young voices rose proudly in their mother tongue. From heartfelt recitations to the singing of the National Anthem in Itsekiri, every performance carried the richness of heritage and the joy of belonging.

Her Majesty Olori Atuwatse III described the event as a moment of profound joy, reflecting on how the children’s words affirmed both the dignity of the culture and the continuity of the Itsekiri story.

Language is heritage,” she noted. “It holds memory, defines identity, and preserves a people’s story. Each word spoken by these children conveyed the strength of our culture and the assurance of its future.”

The gathering was not only a celebration of children but also a statement of confidence in the generations to come. Across Africa, indigenous languages remain treasures of wisdom and beauty. Protecting them secures dignity and strengthens the collective voice of the continent on the global stage.

The day closed with a powerful reminder: language carries power, and heritage carries wealth. Nurturing both safeguards Africa’s legacy for generations.
